Justin Roberts is a Professor of Nutritional Physiology at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science department. He is also Senior Team Lead for Muscle, Performance and Recovery at Danone's Global Research and Innovation Center. His research focuses on nutritional strategies to enhance exercise metabolism, polyphenol interventions, and gut-muscle axis interactions. He has supervised 6 completed PhDs and 25 MSc/MRes students, with current advisees in inflammation and probiotic-phytonutrient complexes.
Roberts holds editorial roles, including Editor-in-Chief of the Nutrition Evidence Database and Review Editor for Frontiers in Nutrition. He has led over 20 research grants since 2013, including studies on green tea extracts, metabolic devices, and plant-based proteins. His teaching includes modules like Performance & Exercise Nutrition and Multidisciplinary Sport & Exercise Science.
Research interests span phytonutrient effects on fat oxidation, probiotic interventions, and calorie-restriction mimetics. He has published extensively in journals like Nutrients and Journal of Applied Physiology, with recent works on hydroxytyrosol phytocomplexes and gut microbiome stability in athletes.
Professional roles include Senior Nutrition Advisor for the England Men's Football Team and Manchester City FC. He has presented at international conferences and contributed to media discussions on sports nutrition via BBC and The Conversation.
