Mark Babic

Dr Mark Babic is a Lecturer – Education in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and is situated within the College of Human and Social Futures. A scholar-practitioner with a PhD and extensive secondary teaching experience, he has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and currently leads or co-leads research projects exceeding A$83,000 in external funding.

Research Focus

Mark’s research sits at the intersection of physical-education pedagogy, population health, and implementation science. His work investigates how school-based interventions can increase physical activity, reduce sedentary behaviour, and improve mental health among children and adolescents. He has particular expertise in culturally responsive programs for Indigenous youth and in translating evidence into scalable practice for teachers and health professionals.

Recent Scholarly Trends

Across his 2020-2025 publications, Mark has concentrated on three major themes: (1) high-intensity interval training (HIIT) integrated into schools and workplaces, (2) systematic reviews and meta-analyses synthesising evidence for physical-activity and mental-health interventions, and (3) equity-focused trials with children with intellectual disability and Indigenous Australian students. These studies collectively advance understanding of practical, theory-driven strategies to enhance physical literacy and wellbeing across diverse populations.

Leadership & Service

He heads the Marking and Assessment team for all National Teaching Performance Assessments (NTPAs) and is responsible for final professional-experience placements (internships) within the School of Education.
