Marju Luts-Sootak is a Professor of Legal History at the University of Tartu's School of Law within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds a Doctor’s Degree (2000) and Research Master’s Degree (1993) in Law from the University of Tartu. Her career includes roles as Vice Dean, Head of Chair, and Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, alongside extensive administrative leadership in legal education and research.
Her research focuses on Legal History, Methodology of Legal Scholarship, Baltic Provincial Law, and the intersection of Legal Systems with National Identity. Notable works include studies on Estonia’s post-WWI land reforms, Soviet-era legal resistance, and the evolution of constitutional frameworks.
Her publications span legal historiography, constitutional law, and criminal code analysis. Key themes include legal pluralism, property rights under different political regimes, and the preservation of academic integrity during oppressive periods. She has received awards such as the University of Tartu Medal (2016) and the Roman Herzog Scholarship (1998).
Luts-Sootak serves on editorial boards of journals like Juridica and Glossae, and chairs international committees for legal history projects. She has led over 10 research projects, including studies on Baltic legal cultures and the legacy of Roman law in Eastern Europe.
