Merike Ristikivi is an Associate Professor in Legal History (Roman Law and Latin) at the University of Tartu's School of Law, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. She also serves as Programme Director and has held roles including Vice Director and Associate Professor at Tallinn University. Her research focuses on legal terminology development, Estonian legal culture, and post-Soviet legal reforms. Ristikivi holds a PhD from the University of Tartu (2010) and has extensive administrative roles in academic governance and international partnerships.
Education: PhD in Law (2010), Research Master's in Classical Philology (2006), and BA/MA in Classical Philology from the University of Tartu (1991–2006).
Her research explores Latin legal terms in Estonian law, legal pluralism, and constitutional identity. Key projects include studying Estonia's legal reforms post-independence and the role of individuals in constitutional change. Awards include DAAD scholarships, the Programme Director of the Year Award (2017), and recognition for her doctoral work (2010).
Ristikivi advises on terminology programs, chairs international journals, and holds leadership roles in organizations like the European Society for Comparative Legal History. Her recent work analyzes gender dynamics in legal professions and judicial system reconstruction in post-communist contexts.
