Marjorie Silverman is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Ottawa with expertise in critical social gerontology. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Work from McGill University (2013), a Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy from Argyle Institute (2005), an M.A. in Buddhist Philosophy (2002), and a B.A. in World Religions (1999).
Her research employs creative qualitative methods to explore family care dynamics, dementia experiences, trans gerontology, and spatial relationships in aging. Primary interests include young adult carers, dementia-friendly neighborhoods, embodiment in later life, and transgender aging.
She leads major research initiatives including:
- SSHRC Insight Grant (2019-2024) on trans older adults with dementia
- SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2016-2019) on intergenerational caregiving
- Alzheimer Society of Canada grant on dementia care environments
