Marjorie K. M. Chan is an Associate Professor of Chinese Linguistics in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) at The Ohio State University, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Linguistics. She joined OSU in 1987 and specializes in Chinese linguistics, focusing on phonetics, phonology, dialectology, and computational linguistics. Her work explores the prosody-discourse interface, Cantonese linguistics, and regional operas' linguistic bases.
- Education: Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Washington (1985).
- Research: Investigates prosodic transcription (ToBI systems), humor linguistics, language and gender dynamics, and corpus-based analyses of written Cantonese. Collaborates on projects like the Chinese Theater Collaborative and CHINOPERL website.
- Teaching: Offers courses on Chinese linguistics, Cantonese, and Chinese opera. Supervises graduate and undergraduate research, including thesis/dissertation advising.
- Service: Former Director of the Institute for Chinese Studies (2010–2018). Organizes major conferences like the Buckeye East Asian Linguistics Forum (BEAL), North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics (NACCL), and Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (WICL).
Grants & Funding: Co-created the Cantonese Gamluhk Fund and contributed to the James H-Y. Tai Buckeye East Asian Linguistics Fund. Secures grants for workshops and digital humanities projects.
