Professor Marjorie K.M. Chan is a faculty member in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) at The Ohio State University, within the College of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in Chinese linguistics, with a focus on Cantonese language pedagogy and sociolinguistics. Her roles include teaching, supervising the Cantonese language program, and organizing academic conferences such as the International Conference on Yue Dialects and the Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (WICL). She has co-edited volumes like BEAL-9 and contributed to digital projects like the Chinese Theater Collaborative.
Her research spans language variation, historical linguistics, and language policy. She has advised numerous graduate students, including Chen Litong (Ph.D., 2016) and Yang Seojin (Ph.D., 2023). She served as Director of the Institute for Chinese Studies (2010–2018), overseeing events like the China and the Jews in the Modern Era symposium. She initiated the Cantonese Gamluhk Fund to support Cantonese language instruction.
Professor Chan’s contributions extend to editorial roles (e.g., CHINOPERL website) and interdisciplinary collaborations, such as her work on sociolinguistic variation in Shanghai and Taiwan. Her teaching includes courses on Chinese opera and linguistics, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to language and culture.
