Professor James H-Y. Tai is an Adjunct Professor at The Ohio State University's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL). He previously served as a full-time faculty member from 1986 to 1995, advising two M.A. theses and twelve Ph.D. dissertations. He is a founding member of the North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics (NACCL) and has maintained strong ties with DEALL through endowments, including the Buckeye East Asian Linguistics Fund and the Cantonese Gamluhk Fund. His research spans Chinese syntax/pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, sign linguistics, and language aging, supported by numerous grants. Beyond OSU, he held leadership roles at National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan, serving as Dean of Liberal Arts, Vice President, and director of research centers. He also served as Director-General of Taiwan's National Science Council and President of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics.

Professor Tai's research has produced 7 monographs and nearly 100 publications since 1971. He remains active in academia, advocating for lifelong learning with his mantra, “Use it or lose it.”
Key contributions include editorial roles at journals like the Journal of Chinese Linguistics and the Journal of Chinese Language Teaching, as well as organizing academic events such as NACCL's 30th anniversary. His legacy is further honored through a Festschrift published by OSU Libraries in 2023.
