Marina Morrow serves as a Faculty Fellow at York University's Faculty of Health and is affiliated with the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research. Her academic work centers on critical health policy research with specific focus on mental health systems, social justice frameworks, and human rights applications.
Her research program explores five interconnected themes:
- Mental health reform, service provision and access to health services
- Mental health and social inequity
- Mental health, citizen engagement and social justice
- Neoliberal reforms, gender and health
- Intersectional theory and approaches in mental health
Dr. Morrow's scholarship emphasizes collaborative partnerships with community organizations, healthcare practitioners, and policy makers. She leads the SSHRC-funded international project "Realizing Human Rights and Social Justice in Mental Health," conducting comparative research across Canada, Australia, and Kenya.
Her recent work examines how colonial histories shape mental health legislation and practices, revealing systemic discrimination against marginalized communities. Field research through focus groups and interviews documents experiences of coercion, involuntary treatment, and structural oppression in mental health care systems.
Dr. Morrow advocates for recovery-oriented, non-coercive community mental health services aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Her research calls for eliminating seclusion and restraints while centering lived experiences in policy reform.
