Piers Gooding is an Associate Professor at La Trobe Law School, focusing on disability law, mental health policy, and human rights implementation. He holds an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship and serves on editorial boards of the International Journal for Mental Health and Capacity Law and International Journal of Disability and Social Justice.
His research examines supported decision-making frameworks, algorithmic governance in mental health care, and trauma-informed legal practice. Dr. Gooding collaborates with UN Special Rapporteurs and community organizations on disability rights reforms. His book A New Era for Mental Health Law and Policy analyzes CRPD implementation challenges.
Recent projects investigate digital mental health ethics, including chatbot applications, AI risk assessment tools, and technology-mediated coercion. He partners with Lisa Brophy and Chris Maylea on trauma-informed legal services research. Current ARC-funded work develops human rights assessments for mental health legislation and trauma-informed service models.
Dr. Gooding teaches disability law and policy, supervises PhD candidates, and previously coordinated the Melbourne Social Equity Institute Doctoral Academy. His work has informed law reform commissions, supreme courts, and WHO policy guidelines.
