Marina Dekavalla is an Associate Professor in Media and Communication (Media and Film) at the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, University of Sussex. She holds a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Stirling (2010), an MA from Stirling, and a BA from the University of Athens. Prior to academia, she worked in the communications industry. Her research focuses on the intersection of discourse, politics, and society, with notable projects including an ESRC-funded study on the 2014 Scottish independence referendum and work on digital technologies and YouTube content creator discourses.
Research interests include referendum framing, media industry transitions, internet regulation metaphors, and the role of media in public discourse. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (RSA) and has supervised PhDs on topics ranging from political communication in referendums to media representations in Oman.
Her recent publications analyze internet metaphors, YouTube content creator dynamics, and policy discourses. Grants include £105k from ESRC for her Scottish independence referendum study. She has held academic roles at the University of Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian, and Strathclyde Universities before joining Sussex in 2017 as Senior Lecturer.
