Justice Marilyn Kelly is a Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Wayne State University Law School since 2013, where she teaches the Access to Justice Seminar. She previously served as Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court (2009–2011) and was a justice there from 1996 to 2013. She currently chairs the Wayne State University Board of Governors and serves on the Law School’s Board of Visitors.
Education: J.D. (Wayne State University Law School, 1971), M.A. (Middlebury College), B.A. (Eastern Michigan University), with additional studies at La Sorbonne, University of Paris.
Research focuses on access to justice, civil rights advocacy, legal ethics, and public policy. Her career spans law practice, appellate litigation, and judicial leadership, emphasizing equitable legal systems and community service. Key recognitions include the Guardian of Justice Award (2009), Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award (2003), and multiple lifetime achievement awards.
Professional roles include leadership in the Women’s Bar Association, Michigan State Bar Foundation, Open Justice Commission, and National Consortium for Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts. Community involvement includes board roles with the Women’s Survival Center and Detroit Public Schools advisory committees.
