Marileen Dogterom is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Bionanoscience at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Applied Sciences. She also holds a professorship at Leiden University's Faculty of Sciences. Her research focuses on biophysical studies of microtubules and cytoskeletal systems, including force generation, assembly dynamics, and in vitro reconstitution. Dogterom earned her Ph.D. in Physics from Université Paris-Sud (Orsay) in 1994. She has held leadership roles at AMOLF Institute and Bell Labs, and her honors include the Dutch Physica Prize and an ERC Synergy Grant.
- Education: M.Sc. Theoretical Physics (University of Groningen, 1990), Ph.D. Physics (Université Paris-Sud, 1994)
- Positions: Chair of Bionanoscience (since 2014), Professor at Leiden University (since 2000)
Her research explores microtubule dynamics, actin-microtubule interactions, and cellular force generation using advanced techniques like optical tweezers. Key contributions include understanding microtubule aster positioning and motor protein mechanics. Dogterom's work bridges physics and biology, addressing fundamental questions in cell biophysics.
Her awards reflect recognition of groundbreaking contributions, including the VICI Award (2007) and EMBO membership (2013). She leads interdisciplinary teams at Delft's Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, integrating nanotechnology with biophysical studies.
