Mariko Kanamori is a Guest Researcher at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Stockholm University, and holds roles as Guest Associate Professor at Azabu University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Collaborator at Kyoto University’s Department of Social Epidemiology. Her research focuses on social epidemiology, mental health disparities, and human-animal relationships. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology (University of Tokyo, 2022), Master of Public Health (2018), and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Hokkaido University, 2015).
Key research interests include urban-rural mental health inequalities, migrant mental health, gender norms, and agricultural impacts on farmer health. She was awarded the prestigious IKUSHI Prize (Japan’s top doctoral award) for her PhD work on urban-rural suicide disparities. Recent projects explore community gender norms and their mental health consequences, with findings showing restrictive norms double suicide risks among older adults. Her work integrates quantitative and qualitative methods, leveraging large datasets like the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES).
Publications highlight rural-urban suicide divides, migration’s role in health disparities, and the protective effects of social capital. She leads projects on human-animal coexistence, emphasizing veterinary public health. Her research has been cited in policy reviews, including WHO reports on gender inequities in long-term care. Collaborations with Swedish institutions have strengthened her work on contextual factors in suicide epidemiology.
Grants include a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science postdoctoral fellowship (2023–2027). She advises on public health interventions targeting rural communities and migrant populations. Lab affiliations include Kyoto University’s Institute for the Future of Human Society and Stockholm’s Public Health Sciences Department teams focusing on social determinants of health.
