Ayako Hiyoshi is an epidemiologist and Researcher at Örebro University, affiliated with the School of Medical Sciences and Department of Medical Sciences. She holds additional roles as a Guest Researcher at Stockholm University and Distinguished Visiting Associate Professor at Kyoto University (2024). With a PhD in epidemiology from University College London (2013), her work focuses on social and life-course epidemiological perspectives, particularly disease risks, healthcare use, and health inequalities. She leads the development of the CARE and DARE databases, integrating Swedish national registers for longitudinal health and social data analysis. Her research spans collaborations with institutions in Sweden, UK, and Japan, addressing topics like bereavement consequences, disability and cancer, and pandemic strategies. Supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council and Nyckelfonden, her multidisciplinary approach combines clinical, social, and life-course epidemiology. Key projects include studies on COPD outcomes, diabetes-related amputations, and mental health correlates of infections.
Her research emphasizes methodological rigor, including register-based cohort studies and sibling comparison designs. She teaches epidemiology at the doctoral level and advises on statistical methods across Örebro’s research projects. Notable contributions include analyses on post-COVID-19 demyelinating diseases and the impact of visual acuity on cycling injuries. Hiyoshi’s work bridges epidemiology with policy, addressing societal health challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.
