Marije Bartels

Marije Bartels serves as an Associate Professor in Medical at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Pediatric Hematology department of Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital/UMC Utrecht. As a core member of the Child Health strategic program, she actively participates in national and international committees focused on pediatric bone marrow failure disorders and red blood cell pathology.

Her research centers on inherited bone marrow failure syndromes and rare anemias, with specialized expertise in Diamond-Blackfan anemia and Severe Congenital Neutropenia. She investigates epigenomic regulation of myeloid disorders using patient-derived iPSC models and integrates clinical data from the Diamond-Blackfan Anemia syndrome registry to develop targeted therapies and improve lifelong patient management. Her work bridges laboratory discoveries with clinical applications for rare hematological conditions.

Recent publications demonstrate her translational focus across pediatric hematology, including physical activity in chronic conditions, metabolic profiles in sickle cell disease, and novel therapeutics for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. Her research consistently addresses unmet clinical needs in rare blood disorders through multidisciplinary approaches.
