Marij Swinkels is an Assistant Professor at the Utrecht School of Governance (USG), Utrecht University, specializing in crisis leadership, EU governance, and open science. Her research focuses on political leaders' role in crises, particularly the Eurozone crisis, and the impact of their beliefs on policy decisions. She defended her PhD dissertation on EU leaders' influence in crisis management in 2021, earning the UACES Best PhD Thesis Prize in 2022.
Swinkels teaches courses on political leadership, policy analysis, and public administration. She actively promotes open science through projects like InclUUsion, which provides free courses for refugee students, winning the Utrecht University Silver Medal in 2020.
