Prof. Femke van Esch is a Professor of European Governance and Leadership at the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG), where she also serves as Vice Dean of the Law, Economics, and Governance faculty. Her expertise spans European Union leadership, crisis management, cognitive mapping methodologies, and monetary policy. She leads interdisciplinary initiatives such as the LEG Master in European Governance, collaborating with institutions like Masaryk University and University College Dublin.
Her research focuses on EU crisis responses, leadership legitimacy, and the role of leaders' beliefs in policymaking. Notably, she directed the EU Horizon2020-funded Transcrisis Project, enhancing EU crisis management capacities. She pioneered cognitive mapping applications for studying political elites and citizen perceptions of the EU, supported by grants from the Netherlands E-Science Centre and the Utrecht Applied Data Science focus area.
Van Esch has been recognized with the USG Best Young Teacher Award twice and actively engages in public discourse on European governance through blogs and media. She previously served on the Dutch Advisory Council on European Integration (2011–2019), advising ministers on foreign and EU policy. Her work bridges European integration theory, leadership studies, and methodological innovation in political analysis.
Her publications span over 50 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing EU leadership dynamics, cognitive mapping applications, and crisis governance. Key projects include automated cognitive mapping tools (cognitivemapr) and analyses of leadership during the Eurozone and refugee crises. She also explores cultural dimensions influencing financial behaviors, such as cryptocurrency adoption across nations.
