Marieke Kluin

Marieke Kluin is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology, Leiden University. She is also a Guest Researcher at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). Her academic work spans interdisciplinary research in criminology, focusing on organizational, environmental, and white-collar crime, with a particular interest in compliance and regulatory enforcement.

She earned her PhD from Delft University of Technology in 2014 with a thesis titled Optic Compliance - Enforcement and Compliance in the Dutch Chemical Industry, based on a decade-long multi-case study of Seveso corporations. Prior to her PhD, she studied Criminology at Erasmus University Rotterdam and gained practical experience as a clerk in the District Court of Rotterdam, a probation officer in The Hague, and a researcher at the Dutch National Police and TU Delft.

Her research interests include white-collar crime, environmental crime, compliance, regulatory enforcement, and corporate offending analyzed through a life-course criminology lens. She has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications and authored chapters in academic volumes such as The Cambridge Handbook of Compliance.

Her recent publications reflect a consistent focus on corporate and environmental violations, using longitudinal and comparative methods. Themes include the predictive relationship between rule violations and industrial incidents, compliance in chemical industries, and the application of life-course theories to corporate crime.

She holds a Basic Teaching Qualification and is actively involved in teaching at Leiden Law School at both undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses. She has also served as a guest lecturer at TU Delft, Erasmus University, and VU University Amsterdam.

Marieke Kluin has demonstrated strong public engagement, having appeared in media outlets including television, radio, and newspapers to discuss her research findings. She collaborates with prominent scholars such as Arjan Blokland and Wim Huisman and is deeply embedded in Dutch and international criminological research networks.
