Wim Huisman

Wim Huisman is a Full Professor of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, VU University Amsterdam, and serves as the head of the VU School of Criminology. He is also affiliated with A-LAB and the Empirical and Normative Studies group. Additionally, he holds a guest researcher position at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). His primary academic focus lies in white-collar crime, corporate crime, and organized crime.

Wim Huisman’s research centers on corporate and white-collar crime, with emphasis on regulatory violations, corruption, corporate complicity in human rights abuses, environmental crime, and food fraud. His work integrates empirical and theoretical perspectives, often exploring the interplay between individual motivations, organizational culture, and industry norms. He has conducted longitudinal studies on chemical corporations and developed crime scripts for seafood fraud, highlighting situational and structural enablers of economic crime.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward policy-relevant, interdisciplinary criminological research. Themes include public-private cooperation in financial crime, data analytics in law enforcement, and evidence-based security policy. His methodological approaches span comparative crime script analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and qualitative assessments of compliance cultures.

Scientific recognition includes the ASC Division of White-Collar and Corporate Crime Outstanding Book Chapter Award (2023). He has also contributed significantly to editorial work and academic discourse through his role as Co-Editor in Chief of a leading journal.

Huisman has supervised six PhD theses and teaches courses such as Introduction to Criminology, Financial-Economic Crime, and Public Law Enforcement. His research projects include 'Better Detection with the Lab in Your Pocket' and 'Police, Private Investigation, and Undermining Crime'. He has been a visiting professor at Griffith University, Northeastern University, and Mekelle University, reflecting his international engagement.

He is actively involved in research networks and expert meetings on compliance, deviance at work, and situational crime prevention. His affiliations with NSCR and EUROC underscore his leadership in advancing criminological knowledge on organizational crime and regulatory enforcement.
