Marie-Louise Crawley is an Assistant Professor in Dance and Cultural Engagement at Coventry University's Research Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE). Her research focuses on the intersection of dance with museums, archaeology, and Classics, particularly ancient dance and the performance of epic. She holds a PhD from Coventry University (2018), an M.St. in European Literature from the University of Oxford (2003), and a BA in Classics and Modern Languages from Oxford (2002).
Previously a professional dancer with Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil (2003–2009), she transitioned to academia while continuing choreographic work with institutions like the Ashmolean Museum and Tate. She is a Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama (APGRD) and a Series Editor for Bloomsbury’s Dance in Dialogue.
Her EU-funded projects include WEAVE (2021–2022), CultureMoves (2018–2020), and REACH (2017–2020). Awards include the Hosking Houses Trust Fellowship (2021). She actively collaborates on digital humanities initiatives and cultural heritage projects, emphasizing community engagement and interdisciplinary research.
Her work bridges performance, archaeology, and digital innovation, with notable outputs in dance education, museum curation, and ancient performance studies. She advises on doctoral studies and contributes to academic leadership roles such as editor of Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices.
