Marie-France Deschênes is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Nursing Sciences (University of Montreal) and a regular researcher at the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire en réadaptation du Montréal métropolitain (CRIR) and the Centre d’innovation en formation infirmière et apprentissages professionnels (CIFI-AP). She holds roles as Scientific Director of CIFI-AP and is a member of its research team. Her work focuses on innovative educational strategies to develop clinical reasoning and competency evaluation in healthcare professionals, particularly nurses.
Education: She earned a Master's in Nursing Sciences (2007) and PhD in Nursing Sciences (2020) from the University of Montreal, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Measurement and Education at the University of Ottawa (2022).
Research Interests: Deschênes specializes in clinical reasoning development, competency assessment frameworks, and the design of educational tools like Script Concordance Tests (TCS) and Learning-by-Concordance (LbC). She emphasizes the role of clinical supervision and continuous professional development (CPD), particularly leveraging information and communication technologies (ICT) for healthcare education. Her work addresses challenges in interdisciplinary care, postgraduate nursing training, and adapting educational methods to evolving professional contexts.
Grants & Projects: She leads or co-leads several grants funded by Quebec and Canadian research councils, including projects on interdisciplinary clinical reasoning (FRQS, 2024–2030), competency development in physical rehabilitation (FRQS, 2024–2028), and educational strategies for international students (Quebec Ministry of Higher Education, 2024–2026). Her research integrates psychometric validation, simulation-based learning, and collaborative frameworks.
Awards: In 2024, she received the Research Prize in Continuing Professional Development from the Quebec Council for Continuing Medical Education.
Advising & Training: Currently supervises master’s and doctoral students in clinical reasoning, evaluative judgment, and competency development. Offers personalized mentorship, peer collaborative learning groups, funding opportunities, and research employment pathways. She recruits students interested in: clinical reasoning education, innovative training modalities (e.g., LbC), nursing education in physical rehabilitation contexts, and pedagogical reasoning in clinical supervision.
Outreach & Leadership: Co-chaired the 5th International Montreal Conference on Clinical Reasoning (https://www.rcudem.com). Active in organizing interdisciplinary educational events and promoting evidence-based practices in healthcare education.
