Louise-Andrée Brien is an Associate Professor of Practice at the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, University of Montreal, and at the Montreal University Hospital Center (CHUM). She serves as the academic coordinator for the second year of bachelor's programs and for the Health Simulation Expertise Center (Centre EXeSS) at the Faculty. Her clinical expertise is in critical care nursing, with a strong focus on pedagogical strategies in nursing education and simulation-based learning methodologies.
Education:
- B.Sc. in Nursing Sciences, University of Montreal (1992)
- M.Sc. in Nursing Sciences, University of Montreal (2007)
- Canadian Certified Simulation Nurse Educator (2020)
Professor Brien's research focuses on clinical simulation in nursing education, particularly on how simulation develops nursing competencies. She investigates virtual reality simulations, debriefing techniques, and the integration of simulation with traditional clinical placements. Her work aims to enhance student engagement and skill development through innovative pedagogical approaches, with particular emphasis on critical care settings and professional autonomy development for new nurses.
Her publication trajectory shows an evolving focus from traditional simulation methods toward increasingly sophisticated virtual and immersive technologies. Recent work examines comparative effectiveness of different simulation modalities, student engagement metrics, and the development of standardized assessment tools for simulation-based education. This progression reflects the broader trend in healthcare education toward technology-enhanced learning environments.
Scientific Awards:
- Excellence in Nursing Education Teaching Award 2024 - Simulation/Lab Category
- Excellence in Teaching Award 2019 - Innovation Category
- Excellence in Teaching Award 2017 - Professor Category
- Excellence in Teaching Award 2017 - Innovation Category
Professor Brien has supervised multiple master's students focusing on simulation effectiveness, professional development of new nurses, and psychological aspects of clinical performance. Her research is supported by grants from the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators Using Simulation and other organizations, with current principal investigator projects running through 2026. She actively contributes to national standards development through committee work with CASN and Simulation Canada.
She plays a key role in the Centre d'innovation en formation infirmière et apprentissage professionnel (CIFI-AP), developing innovative teaching approaches. Professor Brien also serves on the Professional Examination Committee of the Quebec Order of Nurses and co-chairs the CASN Guidelines for Clinical Placements and Simulation Advisory Committee, influencing nursing education standards nationally.
