PD Dr. Mariam Popal is a Post-Habilitation Fellow in Comparative Literature/World Literature at the University of Bayreuth and member of the Africa Multiple Excellence Cluster. She holds a Habilitation (2023) and PhD (summa cum laude, 2008) from the University of Hamburg and University of Bayreuth. Her research focuses on postcolonial/decolonial theory, literary theory, cultural studies, and gender/queer studies. She leads the interdisciplinary forum 'Othernesses' and chairs the AVL/Comparative Literature blog 'THEORY.TEXT'. Affiliations include the Heinrich-Böll Foundation and international collaborations at McGill, University of Toronto, and others.
Education: MA (Middle East/German Studies, Hamburg), PhD (Middle East Studies/Postcolonial Theory), Habilitation (General & Comparative Literature). Research interests include world literature, critical race theory, and anti-Orientalism. She has organized major conferences on decolonial thought and Stuart Hall's legacy.
