Dr. Maria Varaki is a Lecturer in International Law at the Department of War Studies, King's College London, and Co-Director of the War Crimes Research Group. She holds a PhD in International Criminal Law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights and dual LLM degrees from Tulane and New York University. Previously, she served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Erik Castren Institute, Assistant Professor at Kadir Has University, and held post-doctoral roles at Hebrew University and the University of Copenhagen. Her research focuses on International Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, and Legal Theory, with affiliations to the ILA Committee on Human Rights in Emergencies.

Her research interests include judicial intervention in armed conflicts, ethical leadership in international organizations, and the role of international law in crises. She co-leads the Environmental Security research group, exploring intersections between security studies and environmental law. Recent work addresses gender persecution by the Taliban, cybersecurity challenges, and the ICRC's analysis of humanitarian law in modern conflicts.
Labs/Teams: She directs the War Crimes Research Group and co-leads the Environmental Security research group. Her work integrates theoretical frameworks with practical legal challenges in conflict zones and global governance.
