Dr. Shireen Daft is a Lecturer at Macquarie Law School and Deputy Director of the Centre for Environmental Law (CEL) at Macquarie University. She holds a BA LLB (Hons) from Macquarie University, an LLM in Human Rights and Social Justice from UNSW, and a PhD from Macquarie University (2015). Her research focuses on international law, children affected by armed conflict, international humanitarian law, and environmental justice.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on international law, criminal justice, and war law. Her research explores intersections between human security, international law, and criminal justice responses to child soldiers. She has contributed to parliamentary inquiries on hate crimes, environmental crises, and wildlife trafficking.
Recent work includes analyses of human security frameworks, hate crime legislation, and the legal status of environmental destruction as a war crime. She has received the 2022 Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award for student-nominated excellence.
Key projects include the Children and Young People’s Rights, Participation and Protection (CRPP) Network, examining legal protections for vulnerable groups. Her media engagements highlight advocacy on topics like military dog protections and chemical weapon use by police.
