Maria Temmes is a postdoctoral researcher at the Unit of Social Research, Tampere Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TACTIS), University of Tampere. Her work focuses on feminist science and technology studies, particularly the sociological, historical, and philosophical dimensions of biomedicine. She leads the Gendered Chronic Disease, Embodied Differences and Biomedical Knowledge (GenDis) project, funded by the Academy of Finland and Kone Foundation.
Temmes holds a PhD in Gender Studies from Central European University (2018), alongside MAs in History (University of Helsinki, 2012) and Gender Studies (Central European University, 2011). Her research explores intersections between chronic illness, patient advocacy, and biomedical knowledge systems, with recent emphasis on self-tracking technologies in endometriosis care and gendered conceptualizations in biomedicine.
Her scholarly contributions include studies on healthcare system contestation, digital health infrastructure, and the materiality of medical concepts like 'sex' in stem cell research. She actively participates in international conferences, organizing workshops on topics such as health trajectories and endometriosis pain management.
