Luca Tainio is an Adjunct Lecturer in Gender Studies at Karlstad University's Centre for Gender Studies and a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki. He is also the editorial secretary for NORMA: International Journal for Masculinity Studies, and a book review editor for NORA – Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. His doctoral research examines transmasculine embodiment, vulnerability, and cultural perceptions of masculinity, particularly regarding the penis and its societal connotations.
Education includes an M.Soc.Sc in Gender Studies from Tampere University (2015) and ongoing PhD studies at the University of Helsinki's Doctoral Programme in Gender, Culture and Society. He has conducted research projects with ILGA-Europe and the University of Turku, focusing on health inequalities among LGBTI communities and transgender activism.
Research interests emphasize trans embodiment, queer theory, affective activism, and intersections of gender with health equity. His publications critically analyze masculinity norms, pandemic impacts on gendered health, and trans academic discourse. He collaborates with the Finnish and Nordic Transgender Studies Networks, contributing to trans-inclusive academic frameworks.
Teaching spans BA/MA Gender Studies courses at Karlstad and Tampere Universities since 2016. His work integrates activism and academia, addressing marginalized experiences through interdisciplinary approaches. Current projects include Trans*Creative (Kone Foundation) and Affective Activism (Academy of Finland), exploring trans cultural production and queer world-building.
