Maria T. Brown is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Social Work at Syracuse University, affiliated with the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and has been recognized with awards such as the National Academy of Social Insurance nomination and the Gerontological Society of America Dissertation Award.
Her research focuses on social gerontology, intergenerational relationships, and health equity, particularly among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, women, and LGBTQ+ communities. Recent projects include studies on religiosity’s impact on mortality, epigenetic aging, and digital communication during the pandemic.
Dr. Brown has published in journals like Journal of Gerontological Social Work and Journal of Family Issues, and is co-investigator on grants addressing financial wellness and dementia caregiving. Her work emphasizes community-based participatory research and policy advocacy.
Professional service includes roles on the Board of Directors for the State Society on Aging of New York and peer review for over 20 journals including The Gerontologist and Journal of Applied Gerontology.
