J. Scott Brown is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Gerontology at Miami University. He is also a Scripps Research Fellow at the Scripps Gerontology Center. His academic career includes post-doctoral training at the Carolina Population Center (UNC-Chapel Hill) and prior roles in healthcare policy evaluation. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Duke University (2002), with earlier degrees from Furman University and Clemson University.
Dr. Brown specializes in the interplay of wealth, health, and social inequality across the life course. His research focuses on gender and racial disparities in aging populations, with particular attention to mortality, morbidity, and mental health. He has conducted comparative studies in the U.S., Ghana, South Africa, and Nepal, exploring issues like caregiver burden, dementia-related stigma, and the impact of socioeconomic status on later-life health behaviors.
His funded projects include NIH-supported studies on late-life marital quality, regional health disparities, and the effects of the pandemic on aging populations. He has published widely in journals such as Demography, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Social Forces, with a focus on bridging demographic analysis with sociological theory.
Dr. Brown’s teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in gerontology and quantitative methods. He has contributed to policy initiatives, including evaluations of assisted living programs and Silver Alert systems for missing elders. His work emphasizes actionable insights for addressing health inequities and improving quality of life for aging populations.
