Maria Strömvik is a Senior Lecturer at Lund University's Department of Political Science and serves as Director of the Centre for European Studies (CFE). In her role as Director, she promotes cross-departmental and cross-faculty research on EU and Europe-related issues. She also edits the blog Europakommentaren, where Swedish university researchers publish commentary on EU matters.
Her research focuses on politics and decision-making within international organizations, particularly the EU. Key areas include the development of the EU's foreign, security, and defense policies, EU security relations with the USA and NATO, EU peace support operations, and the impact of the EU on Swedish democracy. She has substantial expertise in EU-Sweden relations and societal knowledge about the EU.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on EU foreign policy development, security cooperation, and democratic governance. Her work spans theoretical analysis of EU decision-making structures to practical examinations of EU operations in crisis management. Recent publications show increasing attention to local and national implementation of EU policies, particularly regarding democratic engagement at municipal and parliamentary levels.

Strömvik's teaching primarily occurs within the Master of European Affairs program. Her practical experience includes years at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs working on EU foreign, security, and defense policy, as well as serving as the Swedish government's investigator on societal participation in the EU, authoring the report EU på hemmaplan (SOU 2016:10). She holds board positions with the Swedish Network for European Studies in Political Science and the Centre for Öresund Region Studies, and has previously served on advisory boards for the Folke Bernadotte Academy, Sieps, and Carl Bildt's Strategic Council.
As Director of the Centre for European Studies, Strömvik leads an interdisciplinary team facilitating research collaboration across Lund University's faculties. The Centre serves as a hub for EU-focused scholarship and policy engagement in southern Sweden.
