Maria Spacagna is a Professor of Voice at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Fine Arts. A renowned soprano, she has performed globally at prestigious venues including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and the Santa Fe Opera Festival. Her notable roles include Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Violetta in La Traviata, and Liu in Turandot. She is the first American-born artist to perform Madama Butterfly at La Scala.
Education: B.A. and M.A. in Voice from New England Conservatory (with Distinction), and membership at Juilliard Opera Center. Awards include the George London grants, Metropolitan Opera National Council recognition, and the Italian Consulate General’s Outstanding Achievement Award. She serves as Honorary President of the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra.
Teaching roles include Lecturer at Boston University (2005-2012) and faculty member of V.O.I.C.E. Experience, a professional singer training program. Her recordings include the 1997 Madama Butterfly (critically acclaimed as one of the year’s top opera recordings) and Mascagni’s Lodoletta.
Key engagements span over 40 operatic roles across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. She has also performed in concert with major orchestras like the Pittsburgh Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
