Maria Pilar Lorenzo Gradin

Maria Pilar Lorenzo Gradin is a Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), where she earned her PhD in 1987 with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. She holds a Catedrática position within the Department of Galician Philology at the Faculty of Philology. Her research focuses on medieval Romance literatures, with an emphasis on Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, troubadour studies, textual criticism, and digital humanities applications. She has been a visiting researcher at institutions such as La Sapienza University in Rome and the Collège de France in Paris.

Her academic roles include directing the Literature Department at the Ramón Piñeiro Centre for Humanities Research (since 2020) and co-leading the 'Galician-Portuguese Secular Lyrics' project with Mercedes Brea. She has supervised 15 doctoral theses and directed numerous research grants. Notable awards include the Extraordinary Doctorate Award (1987) and her contributions to the European Doctorate in Philology and Criticism.

Her work spans three main research lines: medieval Romance literature, critical editing of troubadour manuscripts, and metrical analysis. She has published extensively on topics like women's songs in medieval poetry, intertextuality in troubadour works, and the influence of Occitan and French literatures. She is Vice President of the SEMYR (Spanish Society of Medieval Studies) and contributes to editorial projects such as the 'Medioevo Ispanico' series.

Key projects include MedDB and PalMedDB databases, which digitize Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry. Her academic leadership includes coordinating doctoral programs like 'The Middle Ages: Images, Texts, Contexts' (2005) and the European Doctorate in Philology (since 2002). She has organized international colloquia and serves on editorial boards for leading journals.
