Maria Lux is an Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Her research-driven practice explores intersections between art, science, and human-animal studies through multi-media installations. She holds an MFA from the University of Illinois (2012) and dual BFAs from Iowa State University (2006). Lux’s work critiques anthropocentric narratives by examining how animals shape human knowledge systems, often employing humor and absurdity to challenge scientific optimism and ecological hierarchies.
Her exhibitions include solo shows at Carnation Contemporary (Portland, OR), Upfor Gallery (Portland, OR), and Antenna (New Orleans, LA). Notable projects include Noah’s Out-of-Order Ark-ade and Reliquary (2024), Nature is Healing (2023), and Point of No Return (2021), which critically engage themes of de-extinction, climate anxiety, and speculative futures. Lux has presented at international conferences in the UK, Finland, and across the US, bridging art-world and academic dialogues.
Recipient of the McMillen Foundation Fellowship (2022) and GAP Grant (2018), she is a member of Portland’s artist-run CarnationContemporary gallery. Her residencies include Stove Works (Tennessee), Cow House Studios (Ireland), and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Lux’s scholarship appears in journals like Tierstudien and Antennae, alongside essays in volumes like Animals and Society: An Introduction to Human-Animal Studies (Columbia UP, 2021).
