Dr. Maria-José Blanco is a Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at King’s College London, specializing in contemporary Spanish women’s literature and life-writing. She has held academic positions at King’s since 2008 and has also taught at University College London, Royal Holloway, and Queen Mary University of London. Her research explores themes of identity, memory, and agency in women’s narratives, emphasizing life-writing as a tool for social commentary. She is affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Women’s Writing and the Motherhood in Post-1968 European Literature Network. Blanco has co-edited several volumes, including Women in Transition (2021) and The Power of Death (2017), and has collaborated with institutions like the Spanish Embassy and the Institut Ramon Llull. Her work bridges literary analysis with cultural and sociological perspectives, addressing topics such as motherhood, migration, and death in Western societies.
Blanco’s academic contributions include organizing conferences like the 2018 Women in Transition event and publishing widely on gender, literature, and cultural studies. She serves as Managing Editor of the Journal of Romance Studies and actively participates in interdisciplinary research groups at King’s, focusing on visual culture and textual representation.
