Richard Blanco is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Art, Communication, and English at Carlow University. Selected by President Obama as the fifth U.S. inaugural poet, he is the first Latino, immigrant, and gay individual to hold this distinction. Born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami, his work centers on cultural identity, immigration, and LGBTQ+ themes.

Blanco's research and literary work span cultural identity negotiation, autobiographical writing, and social justice themes. His poetry collections, including How To Love a Country, City of a Hundred Fires, and Looking for The Gulf Motel, interrogate American narratives and celebrate multicultural ideals. He has also authored memoirs and collaborated on interdisciplinary works like Boundaries with photographer Jacob Hessler.
Blanco has received numerous accolades: the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize, Beyond Margins Award (PEN American Center), Paterson Poetry Prize, Thom Gunn Award, Lambda Literary Award, and multiple honorary doctorates. He was also named a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.
His professional contributions include serving as Education Ambassador for The Academy of American Poets and teaching at Georgetown University, American University, and Wesleyan University. He has written occasional poems for high-profile events, including the U.S. Embassy re-opening in Cuba and Boston Marathon benefit concerts.
