Her educational background includes:
- French and German studies at Exeter College, Oxford
- PhD awarded by Swansea University
- MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London
Professor Jeremiah's research focuses on the intersection of literature, gender studies, and ethics. Her work particularly examines women's writing in German, contemporary Anglo-American and German fiction, motherhood narratives, and translation studies. She approaches these topics through feminist theory, ethical philosophy, and interdisciplinary perspectives that connect literary analysis with cultural studies. Her scholarship demonstrates how literature engages with questions of identity, agency, and social responsibility across different cultural contexts.
Her scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with gender, ethics, and cultural identity across contemporary literature. Jeremiah's work shows a progression from examining German women's writing of the 1970s-80s to broader contemporary narratives across Anglo-American and German contexts, with increasing attention to motherhood, aging, and care. Her publications demonstrate rigorous theoretical engagement while maintaining accessibility for interdisciplinary audiences.
Her notable recognitions include:
- Long-listed for the Man Booker International Prize 2016 (for White Hunger)
- Long-listed for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation 2020 (for Things that Fall from the Sky)
- Joint third prize in the Stephen Spender Prize in 2008
- Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2007)
- Arts Council England grant recipient
Professor Jeremiah has established significant collaborative projects including the Leverhulme Trust-funded 'Nomadic Identities and Aesthetics in Contemporary Women's Writing in German' (2007-2009) and served as Principal Investigator for the 'Finnish Literature Exchange Mentor' project (2016-2017). Her editorial work includes co-editing the Edinburgh German Yearbook and serving on the editorial boards of Studies in Contemporary Women's Writing and Feminist German Studies.
She is an active member of several research networks including the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Women's Writing, the Association for German Studies, Women in German Studies, and the Society of Authors. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to gender equality and quality education.
