Maria Irene Papa is an Associate Professor of International Law at Sapienza University of Rome's Faculty of Law, Department of Legal and Economic Studies. She teaches International Law and International and European Protection of Human Rights courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. Her extensive academic career includes positions at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, China, and research stays at the Max Planck Institute for Public International Law and Comparative Law in Heidelberg.
Professor Papa's research focuses on international law, particularly international dispute resolution, the International Court of Justice, human rights, religious freedom, migration law, and international organizations. Her scholarly work examines the relationship between international law and domestic legal systems, the role of international courts in protecting collective interests, and the evolving challenges in international legal governance. She has published extensively in leading international law journals and has presented her research at numerous international conferences.
Her recent publications analyze contemporary issues such as migrants' religious freedom in multilevel legal systems, collective obligations before the International Court of Justice, and the complex relationship between international trade law and the law of the sea. Professor Papa's work demonstrates deep engagement with both theoretical frameworks and practical applications of international law in addressing global challenges.
She is actively involved in the international law academic community through editorial board memberships, conference organization, and participation in research projects. Professor Papa directs the Master's program in International Humanitarian Law and Armed Conflicts and serves on doctoral committees for Public Law and International Law programs. Her research activities include leadership of the PRIN 2022 project 'Migration and Religion in International Law' and participation in various other research initiatives examining international legal frameworks.
Professor Papa has received recognition for her scholarly contributions, including having her monograph 'I rapporti tra la Corte internazionale di giustizia e il Consiglio di sicurezza' selected as one of the 'Legal Books of the Year 2006' by the Club dei giuristi dell'Istituto Luigi Sturzo. She was also awarded a DAAD post-doctoral scholarship in 2007 for research at German institutions.
