Gianluca Bascherini

Gianluca Bascherini is an Associate Professor of Public Law at Sapienza University of Rome, where he teaches Constitutional Law, Institutions of Public Law, and Immigration Law. He has been a tenured faculty member since March 1, 2018, and previously served as a confirmed University Researcher in Constitutional Law from January 2004 to March 2018. Bascherini is also a Junior Research Fellow of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Avanzati Sapienza (SSAS) for the academic triennia 2021-2024 and 2024-2027.

Bascherini's academic journey began with a summa cum laude degree in Political Science from Sapienza University of Rome in 1994, followed by a PhD in Constitutional Law and General Public Law in 2001. His educational background includes research periods at the Université Paris 1-Panthéon-Sorbonne and Université Paris-XI during his doctoral studies.

His research focuses on constitutional law, immigration law, Italian constitutional history, and the intersection of law and literature. Bascherini explores citizenship concepts, colonial influences on Italian constitutional development, and the relationship between historical events and constitutional evolution. His scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on historical approaches to constitutional law, with particular attention to marginalized perspectives and alternative narratives. Recent work has increasingly addressed contemporary issues like migration, citizenship reform, and the impact of global crises on constitutional frameworks.

Professor Bascherini actively participates in thesis supervision and has been involved in numerous research projects, including serving as principal investigator for projects on immigration during health and economic emergencies (2020) and the metropolis-colonies relationship in Italian state formation (2013). He is a member of the Italian Association of Constitutionalists and contributes to various editorial boards, including the scientific committee of the journal Costituzionalismo.it since 2015. His research group participation spans numerous PRIN projects addressing topics from European citizenship to constitutional transitions during pandemics.

Bascherini regularly organizes academic events and participates in interdisciplinary research teams focusing on migration, constitutional history, and the relationship between law and literature. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary legal challenges, particularly in the areas of citizenship and migration policy.
