Professor Hayes pioneers research at the intersection of marine biotechnology and health, specializing in peptide extraction from microalgae/macroalgae for nutraceutical applications. Her innovative approach combines computational peptide analysis with genomic microbiome mapping to develop solutions for inflammation prevention, cardiovascular health, and sustainable livestock management. Current projects like Seasolutions demonstrate her commitment to translating peptide science into practical environmental and health interventions through algae-based methane reduction strategies.
Her scientific recognition includes the Sprint UCC innovation prize (2022).

Professor Hayes maintains robust funding streams through EU Horizon 2020 projects (Algae4IBD), Enterprise Ireland grants, and direct industry partnerships. Her student mentorship extends beyond eight completed PhDs and three Master's graduates to ongoing supervision of Erasmus students across Europe. Industry collaboration forms a core component of her work, facilitated through Teagasc Engage and evidenced by media features on RTE and TRT World News highlighting her marine science contributions.
She actively bridges academia and public engagement through Science Week presentations, Science Blast judging, and advisory roles like Páirc Na Mara's marine industry initiative, demonstrating exceptional commitment to knowledge transfer across educational, industrial, and community contexts.
