Professor Jan Hayes is a renowned safety and risk management expert at RMIT University’s School of PCPM. With 30+ years of experience, her work focuses on organizational accident prevention across energy, chemicals, nuclear, and aviation sectors. She currently serves as Program Leader for Future Fuels CRC and Board Safety Assurance Adviser for Airservices Australia. Hayes combines academia with part-time consulting for safety improvement projects, emphasizing decision-making, safety design, and regulation. Her research explores disaster causation, professionalism, and story-based learning applications. She has held leadership roles in consulting firms and regulatory bodies, including NOPSEMA’s Advisory Board. Key contributions include cross-industry safety frameworks, regulatory policy analysis, and educational methodologies for risk mitigation. Her recent work addresses low-carbon energy transitions and AI integration in safety systems.
Research interests span sociology, urban planning, and public health, reflecting her holistic approach to systemic risk. Notable projects include evaluating gas infrastructure policies, analyzing procurement cycle risks, and assessing hydrogen upskilling programs for trades.
