Maria Gustavsson is a Professor at Linköping University, affiliated with both the Department of Education and Sociology (APS) and the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Learning (IBL). Her primary research focuses on workplace learning and innovative learning at work, with particular interest in industrial work settings developed during her doctoral thesis work.
Her research interests include:
- Workplace learning and innovative learning at work
- Change and development processes in organizations
- Workplace-based learning in vocational/professional education
- Health-promoting workplace in relation to workplace learning
- Green transition in working life (GROWL research group)
- Skills development for Industry 5.0
Professor Gustavsson has studied both large industrial companies and small-to-medium enterprises, focusing on long-term competence development in production-related workplaces. She has also researched public organizations with emphasis on creating expansive learning environments. Her recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach spanning healthcare management, gender studies, and industrial transformation.
She leads or participates in several significant research projects including:
- GROWL: Green transition in working life
- SKILL-UP: Skills important for workers in Industry 5.0
- Research environment 'Work and working life'
As part of the HELIX research environment, she contributed to projects that in 2022 received SEK 30 million from Forte research council. Her methodology often employs interactive research approaches to follow organizational change processes over time.
