Maria Gritsevich is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria). Her research focuses on planetary science, astronomy, and meteoroid dynamics, with expertise in meteorite composition analysis, transient phenomena observation, and interstellar object studies. She has supervised the Doctoral Programme in Geosciences and contributed to the ERC Advanced Grant project SAEMPL (2013–2018).
Education: PhD in Physics, M.Sc. with awards from Lomonosov Moscow State University. Awards include the ESA Postdoctoral Fellowship, 'Best Journal Publication in Physics and Mathematics,' and having asteroid 14345 named in her honor.
Research interests span meteorite petrology, X-ray transient follow-up, cometary dust dynamics, and planetary defense. She has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and serves as a reviewer for journals like the Astrophysical Journal and Planetary and Space Science.
Media highlights include discussions on Mercury's surface features and tsunami threats. Active in international collaborations, she has organized conferences and contributed to studies on Mars meteorite origins and interstellar meteoroid detection.
