Roles and Affiliations: Tomas Kohout holds the title of Docent and is a University Researcher at the Department of Physics, University of Helsinki. He concurrently serves as a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Geology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He leads the Planetary Geophysics research group, focusing on laboratory experiments with meteorites and space mission data analysis. As Principal Investigator (PI) of the Milani CubeSat for ESA's Hera mission, Co-PI of the Comet Interceptor mission, and science team member of BepiColombo's MIXS instrument, he actively contributes to planetary exploration.
Research Interests: His work spans planetary geophysics, reflectance spectroscopy, space weathering, and impact processes. Key areas include asteroid and lunar surface studies via experimental and observational methods. He explores mission concepts like the LUNAR Geology Orbiter for lunar lava tubes and irregular mare patches.
Teaching and Supervision: He teaches courses on planetary geophysics, exploration, and cosmochemistry. He supervises doctoral and undergraduate students, emphasizing hands-on research in planetary sciences.
Grants and Projects: Recent projects include the Smart-HSI initiative (2021–2023) for hyperspectral imaging innovations and ESA-funded instrumentation development. Earlier work focused on interplanetary dust properties (2012–2015).
Labs and Collaborations: Collaborates internationally on missions and peer reviews, with visits to institutions like Botswana International University of Science and Technology and the Natural History Museum of Denmark. Active in ESA mission teams and journal editorial roles (e.g., Meteoritics and Planetary Science).
