Dr. Maria Berta Ecija is a Lecturer in Global Health at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary University of London. She joined in 2021 and currently teaches courses on Health Inequalities and Social Determinants of Health. Her research explores the intersection of international relations and global health, focusing on Global Health Diplomacy and South-South Cooperation. She examines power dynamics in international health agreements, with a particular emphasis on Brazil's role as a global health actor and its relations with PALOPs (Portuguese-Speaking African Countries).
Her recent work includes the Brazil Accelerator Fund project, analyzing expert input in Brazilian policy-making across social, environmental, and public health domains. She collaborates with institutions like Fundação Oswaldo Cruz and Fundação Getulio Vargas in Brazil. Her research spans HIV/AIDS cooperation, pandemic responses, and multilateral health policies. Ecija's interdisciplinary approach bridges global health, foreign policy, and development studies.
Her publications include a 2023 book on Brazilian health diplomacy in Mozambique and chapters on Brazil-China policy diffusion. She frequently contributes to policy discussions through blogs and podcasts, emphasizing lessons from health crises to inform future strategies.
