Juliana Cesario Alvim Gomes is an Assistant Professor at the Central European University (CEU), focusing on human rights theory, constitutional law, and gender studies. She previously taught at Brazil’s Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), coordinating the Human Rights Clinic and supervising students in litigation and advocacy. Her research examines constitutionalism in Latin America, gender equality, and the intersection of law and social movements. Juliana has been a fellow at Fundação Getúlio Vargas and the Yale Law School’s Global Health Justice Partnership. She co-chairs the Brazilian Chapter of the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S) and hosts a weekly podcast on the Brazilian Supreme Court.
Juliana holds a PhD and MA from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), an LL.M. from Yale Law School, and dual bachelor’s degrees in Law and Social Sciences. Her work spans litigation before domestic/international courts, including cases on military jurisdiction, LGBTQ+ rights, and reproductive health. She leads global research networks like 'Women, Gender, and Constitutionalism in Latin America' and 'Varieties of Constitutionalism.'
Her research emphasizes the politicization of gender, public health, and democracy, with a focus on Brazil’s Supreme Court dynamics. She critiques judicial behaviors and advocates for transformative constitutionalism to counter authoritarian trends. Juliana’s expertise bridges academia and activism, blending empirical research with strategic litigation for human rights advancement.
