Maria Ballester is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Nova Southeastern University's Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. She joined NSU in 2005 as a visiting professor and became a full-time faculty member in 2006. A founding member of NSU's chemistry major, she is deeply committed to undergraduate research and actively participates in the Honors College through courses like CHEM 1300H, CHEM 1310H, and mentorship of honors theses.
Education:
- Ph.D., Florida International University (2005)
- B.S., Florida International University (1998)
- Associate Degree, University of Habana (1990)
Research Focus: Her work spans porphyrin chemistry, biophysical interactions, forensic science, and drug-DNA binding. She also investigates innovative approaches to chemistry education, particularly in online learning environments. Key methodologies include calorimetry, computational modeling, and experiential pedagogy.
Recent Publications: Her 2020 articles reflect dual expertise in physical chemistry (porphyrin protonation thermodynamics) and educational innovation (adapting biophysical chemistry curricula for online delivery). Research consistently integrates experimental validation with theoretical frameworks.
