Amy Hirons is a Professor of Marine Biology at Nova Southeastern University, affiliated with the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and actively involved with the Farquhar Honors College as an honors thesis advisor, event participant, and Research Roundtables contributor.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Alaska Fairbanks
- M.S. in Zoology from the University of Northern Colorado
Dr. Hirons' research spans Arctic to Antarctic regions with field sites in Hawai'i, Peru, Alaska, Russia, and coastal Florida, utilizing seagrass, mangroves, zooplankton, seabirds, fish, sea turtles, and marine mammals to investigate ocean dynamics.
Her primary focus examines energy transport mechanisms including food webs and currents, alongside contaminant analysis in biological organisms and marine sediments. She directs the Charismatic Megafauna and Oceanography Laboratory (CMOL), which actively supports graduate and undergraduate research initiatives.
As an honors thesis advisor, she mentors students through CMOL's research programs while teaching HSCI 1000H Science in the News. Her laboratory provides structured research pathways for students across marine biology and oceanography disciplines.
