Margaret Scharle is a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed College, affiliated with the Philosophy Department and the Division of Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, and Linguistics. She holds a PhD from UCLA (2005). Her research focuses on ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotelian natural philosophy, ethics, and politics. She has published in leading journals like Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy and Phronesis, and contributed to edited volumes such as Aristotle’s Physics, A Critical Guide. Current projects include a 24-lecture series on Ancient Greek philosophy for The Great Courses (2025) and an entry for the Oxford History of the Classical Greek World.
Her work bridges technical Aristotelian scholarship with broader philosophical questions, exploring themes like elemental teleology, prime matter, and the relationship between natural science and ethics in classical thought. She is also investigating Hesiod’s influence on early Greek philosophy and Plato’s Timaeus.
Notable publications include analyses of Aristotle’s Meteorologica and Physics, examining how his natural philosophy integrates metaphysical principles with empirical observation. Her research emphasizes the systematic coherence of Aristotle’s natural sciences and their implications for understanding ancient conceptual frameworks.
