Margaret Murphy is the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Registrar at Carlow College, where she has been employed since 2009. She holds a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and has extensive experience in medieval history, specializing in Ireland and Britain's social and economic history. Her research focuses on medieval rural and urban settlement, agriculture, and provisioning systems, particularly in Ireland.
Dr. Murphy has contributed to national and international conferences, including the International Medieval Congress in Leeds and the European Urban History Association. She is Secretary of the Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement and has led archaeological projects, including work on the Irish Historic Towns Atlas for Carlow. Her academic background includes roles at the Institute of Historical Research (University of London) and the Discovery Programme (Dublin).
Her publications include books like The Dublin Region in the Middle Ages (2010) and edited volumes such as Agriculture and Settlement in Ireland (2015). Her research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining historical documents with archaeological evidence to reconstruct medieval landscapes and economies.
Margaret continues to lecture on medieval history, local history, and women’s history while overseeing academic affairs at Carlow College. She has advised numerous dissertations and remains active in public engagement through lectures and outreach initiatives.
